Limit at Infinity for Square Root Function by Rationalization IMPORTANT

Evaluate limx→∞ |x| + 2 4x + 3 lim x → ∞ | x | + 2 4 x + 3. Step 1. Simplify the absolute value. Since the limit looks at positive values of x x, we know |x| = x | x | = x. So we can rewrite the limit as. limx→∞ |x| + 2 4x + 3 = limx→∞ x + 2 4x + 3. lim x → ∞ | x | + 2 4 x + 3 = lim x → ∞ x + 2 4 x + 3. Step 2.

1 Answer Konstantinos Michailidis Sep 17, 2015 The square of infinity can be expressed as the following limit lim x→∞ √x = + ∞ hence the square root of infinity is infinity Also we know that ∞ ⋅ ∞ = ∞ hence we conclude the same answer. The limit of the square root of zero is zero. Answer link

1 comment ( 50 votes) Mathuss 10 years ago The definition of a function is that an input has one output. So, if f (x)=sqrt (x), unless we used the principal square root, f (4)= 2 and -2 If this is a function, the input 4 cannot have two outputs! That is why when using the square root in a function, we use the principal square root. 3 comments

2 Answers Sorted by: 10 That really depends on what you mean by "infinity". If you mean ∞, then that is not a number, but rather a shorthand for the concept that some quantity (usually a natural or real number) grows beyond any finite bound. As such, you cannot multiply it with anything, and especially not itself.
